Sea of Love, Sailing
On blustery days , if you stand by the shore , the ocean heaves up translucent walls that crumble and fall in foam and froth punching into the shallows. Farther out in the early morning light, the top of the sea is churned and the canvas of sails pull masts over away from the wind. The hulls trust the keel and push forward into the waves and swells, spray exploding away from the bow and misting the crew, happy to be on the water. I have sailed since I was 5 and love the magic silent power of wind over the sea. This painting is purely created from emotion and took 3 years to complete. It started off as abstract marks then the painting began to tell its own story and chart a course of its own, organically, out of my subconsious. As the waves and ocean took form, I would revisit the composition every 6 months and adjust some color combinations here, add a focal point there , soften the edges, warm up the sky closer to the sun, add color reflected on the sea.
Whether you love standing on the shore and marveling at a powerful surf, or cranking in the main and laying the hull over on her side, or my favorite, shredding the crests skimming the top of the water in a catamaran, the ocean never disappoints, it is always a delight. To capture that delight, I really pushed colors to sing, adding hues you might not expect but somehow make sense when you see the whole assembled in one painting.
