The Early Birds
Ever wake up , go outside and it's just you and the early birds? Walk around as your town wakes up and birds swoop up and down into the trees then convene in crowds here but then suddenly decide to hurry over there under that tree. Charleston wakes up every day teeming with life but the excitement goes beyond starlings, wrens and finches. Once in a while you see a snowy egret or a blue heron hauntng a distant shade patch. The light on the city is electric and warm and you see the optimism and possiblity of the day in the bright sun on Saint Michaels steeple and palm trees that stand guard over Meeting Street. Charleston is a walking town. Whether you have 3 more days and nights in your hotel or , you are taking a break from work, being downtown is special. This painting celebrates the great walking city of Charleston and the hundreds of spectacular scenes like this one that make it a treasure for those of us lucky to know first hand.
