California Dreaming, La Jolla Coast
California Dreaming is a painting I made in the Winter of 2024-2025 after visiting California for a family wedding. I was struck by the truly Cali feel of the place , right on the jagged rocky coastline, massive rollers would arrive and explode on the rocks and wash foam rivers back down to the sea. There were sea lions that laid on the rocks and took the hammering of the waves with zero concern. It struck me that there were lots of peculiar shaped trees and commented to my wife that they looked like a Dr. Seuss drawing. There were funny ball type topiaries on squiggly trunks and floppy looking tufts on stalks , lots of super exaggerated tall royal palms in majestic rows receding into the horizon. My wife googled Dr Seuss and found he ( Theodore Geisel ) lived in LaJolla for a large part of his life.
