330 at Calhoun and Meeting

Charleston provides so many great vignettes for painting iconic or picturesque compositions. I took a photo crossing the street on Calhoun and liked all of the modern technology elements contrasting with the classic icon of the Mother Emanuel AME church steeple. Downtown is so beautiful that every square inch is worth a painting. There is inspiration everywhwere. I wanted a challenge of making a beautiful painting about really nothing , just the light on the subjects. After blocking in the basic values and forms , I began to add the jewelry and push the colors of the painting. I carefully placed yellows right next to blues and purples, reds next to greens and touched in little dabs of civid color on the edges of softer color fields. The end result is this vivid painting that sings joy about ....Charleston and the visual mecca that it is.
